    Ok, guys, please be nice...

For one part of my film project, which is utilizing different film stocks, I want to shoot...PORN!

Well, not exactly. My film is about the memories of a mother in her '40's, the mistakes she made when she was young, etc. Anyway, I was inspired by that Showtime movie, I think it was called "Rated X" with Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez. It was a true story about the Mitchell brothers from San Francisco, who made that early Marilyn Chambers movie, "Beyond the Green Door." Well, I want to shoot my character having simiuilated sex as if it was shot from that era (the early '70s). Obviously I am going to use Kodachrome 40 which has that '70's look. Well, anyway, I know they used to make porn films on S8 so I was wondering where I could find copies of these to do "research" on.

I don't want to just watch '70's porn films on videotape. I want to see some of the stuff that was more amateur from that era. I think they called them "loops' or something.

I hope this doesn't sound too weird or crazy. This is only one small part of the film.

you are very brave! you might try the magazine outre' (i think that's the right spelling), although they don't sell porn (it's an alternative film mag), they do sell films by Bettie Page a stripper/pinup from the 1950's-1960's. they may have also other ads for old cinema. the magazine is sold at borders and barnes & noble book stores. you might have to go on ebay to find these films also. or even do research on what companies are still in business who were shooting back then. they may still offer some of these films. you may have to buy some porn to find these...hope this helps.

    Susie,
I have a few of these "stag" films on super-8
I bought at comic book store in my home town.
To tell you the truth, I was pretty suprised
to see that they had them for sale there.
They cost $7.50 for the silent ones and
$12.50 for the one sound one I bought.
The original price on the covers are $79.95!
Well anyway, my point is that if you go to
a comic book store, you never know what you
might find. They just might have them there
    too. Good luck.

I've seen these for sale on ebay.
Go to the 8mm section under movies.
As far as filming technique for this goes (I know, that wasn't your question), if you want it to be erotic, but not "show everything", go in for closeups, and do a lot of cuts & stuff.
Make sure you put it up for sale on this forum. You'll get lots of buyers!

    Hi Matt!
thanks for the technique advice. I'm going to try and match some of the shots in those films, but obviously I can't show penetration so I'll do the close-ups as you recommend and "suggest" the hard core stuff (not erotic as far as I'm concerned!)

As for selling to people here, I'll be happy to, but, believe me, it's not going to be the kind of film you imagineit to be as it will deal with psychological issues and the unhappiness of the film's protagonist over the years. Not exactly titillating fare!

    Hi Susie,

There's no anything wrong in shooting porn. I know your movie isn't, but I think that erotic or porn films, if well shooted, are as valid as any other kind of movie.

    Good luck with your project!!

I have several old stag films form the 40's & 50's. One is from the 50's and truly VERY amateurish but clear. My main question is where will you have it processed? I don't think Yale will like it. Personally, I think I would like to view it. Please update us.

    Hi, Susie!

One thing to consider is the "Ektachome Look" so unique to porn films from the 70's. Most were shot on 16mm Ektachrome then reduced to 8mm loops or blown up to 35mm for the porno houses. The films always had a second generation, bluish quality to them. If you want your footage to look like it was shot on 16mm and viewed via 35 (depending on the context of the story) then I would suggest you shoot on K40 (for finer grain), but put a blue color correction filter on it to screw around with the skin tones and give it that "Ektachrome Look". If you want it to look like it came from an 8mm loop, then I would actually shoot on Ektachrome and embrace the grain and color it will give you naturally.

    Sincerely,
    Dirk Diggler wink
